PREPARING ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION LEADERS:
The Center for Leadership in Education
To make significant strides in K–12 education, we need more than great teachers. The educational landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade, creating a need for bold leaders who can transform organizations to meet the ambitious standards set for all students. And they must be prepared to play new roles and lead new organizations, such as charter schools and non-profit agencies focused on K–12 reform.
Through the Stanford Center for Leadership in Education (SCLE), the K–12 Initiative is at the forefront of preparing these leaders. The effort draws on Stanford’s strengths in organizational management and change, expertise in instruction and education reform, and its longstanding entrepreneurial tradition. It links faculty scholars with leaders from the field and is anchored by the conduct of fundamental research on the organizational structures that effectively support systemic reform.
SCLE’s first aim is to help today’s school and district leaders develop the expertise and entrepreneurial vision to undertake much-needed reform. Two current programs, guided by the expertise of faculty from the fields of education, business, and design, illustrate the potential of this work. The yearlong Stanford Principal Fellows Program, launched in 2008, hones the capacity of early-career principals as instructional leaders, organizational managers, and innovative decision makers. The Leadership for Equity and Accountability in Districts and Schools (LEADS) network comprises a consortium of districts across the country committed to significant district and school change. Over a three-year period, they share collective knowledge and challenge the status quo to create action plans focused on the real bottom line—students.
Programs like these will provide academic researchers with valuable evidence and create knowledge of immediate value to those leading educational change. They will also complement the work of the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching, offering support and guidance as K–12 educators rise along the leadership continuum from the classroom to the superintendent’s office.
SCLE’s second goal is to help train the next generation of K–12 leaders, and it will begin by bringing new depth to three unique master’s degrees: the School of Education’s Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies (POLS) program and two pioneering joint degree programs that combine a foundation in education with expertise in business or law. SCLE will connect these dynamic and committed students with in-depth apprenticeships and field-based research, and shape coursework that draws on the knowledge of experienced practitioners—empowering them to drive the future of K–12 education.
